What is Graduated Licensing?

Graduated licensing means that as teen drivers gain experience on the road and prove they're good drivers, they "graduate" to fewer restrictions and more driving privileges. Today, graduated licensing is the law in Illinois.

Teens:
Here's what's new with Graduated Licensing:

  • You need 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice with an adult in the car before you can get your driver's license (including 10 hours at night) . This is in addition to the six hours of instructional time you get during Driver Education class.

  • You may practice with any licensed driver who has held a license for at least one year and is at least 21 years old.

  • You have to hold your learner's permit for at least nine months before you can get a driver's license.

  • You can have only one passenger in the front seat. In the back, you can't have more passengers than safety belts.

  • Everyone under 19 must wear safety belts. (All others are encourage to do so, of course.)

  • If you're convicted of  two moving violations in a 24 month period, your driver's license will be suspended for 30 days. If you're under 18, you'll also have to attend a remedial drivers education course.

  • You're allowed only one court supervision for any serious traffic offense.

  • For the first 12 months after you receive your driver's license or until you reach the age of 18 (whichever comes first), you cannot drive with more that 1 passenger under the age of 20, unless they are your siblings.

And remember, these laws still apply:

  • If you're caught driving with ANY alcohol/drugs in your system or refuse alcohol/drug testing before you're 21 you will lose your driver's license for at least three months.

  • If you're 17 or under, your curfew is 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11:00 p.m. - 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

  • You must carry proof of insurance.
